- Soft tissue and vascular disturbance causes either intermuscular hematoma or intramuscular hematoma.
- Intermuscular hemorrhage of the septum of fascial sheath causes bruising distally.
- Intramuscular hemorrhage heals more slowly and is likely to progress to myositis ossificans.
- Formation of discoloration (red, purple, black, yellow, green, or brown)
- Soreness
- Stiffness
- Tenderness to palpation over the affected area, which lasts for 2-4 weeks.
DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
- X-ray to rule out fracture
- MRI to rule out muscle or tendon rupture
PT IMPLICATIONS
- Pain management
- Early range of motion
- Return to prior level of function or sport
- Rule out:
- Fracture
- muscle or tendon rupture
- phlebitis, compartment syndrome
- osteomyelitis of the femur
- myositis ossificans
