- Inflammation of the pre patellar bursa
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
- Method of Injury:
- Kneeling for prolonged periods of time (carpenters, gardeners, plumbers, roofers)
- Motor vehicle accident (MVA)
- Direct blow to knee
- Swelling at front of the patella
- Tender over the distal patella
- Warm to the touch
- Aggravating factors:
- Kneeling
- Pain with activity
- Diagnosed through the main signs and symptoms over the patella:
- DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
- Calor (heat)
- Dolor (pain)
- Rubor (redness)
- Tumor (swelling)
- Reduced joint function
PT IMPLICATIONS
- Rest and ice
- Educate on aggravating positions and using a kneepad
- Anti-inflammatories
- Assess lower extremity:
- Biomechanics (especially patellar glides)
- Strength
- Alignment
